This section will aid you in preparing for meetings, understanding what an IEP is based on, and how it is supposed to be developed. This is all valuable information and will give you the skill and tools to be an effective advocate.
Knowing your child's rights under the law is especially important. There have been changes to IDEA since the passing of IDEA 2004. Attending a Pete Wright seminar on special education was an eye-opening experience. Getting the "Wrightslaw: Special Education Law" book was especially helpful and practical in dealing with the school system. We highly recommend it as a valuable resource. Also, note that the No Child Left Behind Act is valuable as it can work in conjunction with IDEA.
Next, read IEP Meetings to help you prepare for meetings, Basis of an IEP to assist you in understanding what an IEP is based on and Development of an IEP, which explains the appropriate way an IEP is to be developed and written.
